Raute log handling lines are specially designed for processing the raw materials used by plywood and LVL producers. They feature robust construction and reliable, continuous operation. The scope of the line, as well as the line configuration and the level of automation at which it operates, are determined in cooperation with the customer to ensure that it satisfies the prevailing needs and operating conditions in the best possible way.

Log handling process and modernizations
Block feeding
The most important features with regards the block feeding operation are its ability to function reliably and without jam-ups in order that the capacity needs of the log line are met. The type of technology employed is based on log size, block length variation and the capacity of the line.
Log debarking
Log debarking plays an important role in preparing logs for peeling. Proper debarking enhances the operating efficiency of the peeling line, as well as having a positive impact on the quality and recovery of the peeling operation. The suitable debarking solution is chosen according to log dimensions and the capacity requirements of the line.
Raute’s solutions for debarking are:
- VK 820 PLY: The most widely-used debarker in the plywood industry, it is suitable for processing softwood and hardwood logs.
- VK 8000 HD: For more demanding conditions and when higher capacities are required. Available with an optional air-seal rotor to minimize the gap between logs in the debarker.
- VK 90 / VK 110: For lower-capacity debarking.
Log scanning and metal detection
Log scanning and metal detection are key elements in securing the required quality of the peeler blocks. The metal detector ensures that logs containing metal are removed from the line, or that the section of the log containing metal is marked so that it can be cut out. A 3D log scanner, equipped with laser curtain scanners, provides actual information about the dimension, shape and volume of each log. This information ensures that logs are sawn using the optimal cutting pattern to deliver the highest recovery.
Log cut-off
Different sawing solutions are chosen according to production requirements and the characteristics of the log. Raute’s log cut-off operation ensures that blocks of the correct length are delivered to the peeling operation. Swing saws are well suited to production lines that process a variety of block lengths or that process optimized, cut-to-length blocks. Pull-though and centre-cut saws are the best solutions for high-capacity operations that process standard, cut-to-length logs.
The options available for log sawing are:
- The circular swing saw is a high-capacity and flexible log sawing system for processing a variety of different log and block lengths.
- The circular saw with linear feeder is a high-capacity, centre-cut sawing system.
- The circular saw with pull-through chain is a high-capacity, centre-cut sawing system.
- The multi-blade circular saw with pull-through chain is a high-capacity system for cutting long logs into fixed block lengths.
